Types of countertops: materials guide

What types of kitchen countertops are there? Materials guide

When we think about renovating the kitchen, one of the first questions that comes to mind is: what type of kitchen countertop should I choose? It is not an easy question to answer, since it depends on whether we prefer a more aesthetic countertop than a resistant one, or vice versa. Basically, your choice should be made based on your intended use and your passion for cooking. But that's what Studio by Clikalia is here for, to advise you and explain in detail the pros and cons of the main materials available on the market:

Which kitchen countertop material to choose?

Broadly speaking, we can divide kitchen countertops into six main groups: countertops made of natural stone, natural wood, laminate, composite materials, stainless steel and other materials (glass).

Natural stone countertops

This type of countertops groups several of the most popular materials in kitchens. We are talking about marble, granite and sintered stone countertops.

Marble countertops have a high resistance to heat and are very elegant. The main disadvantage, besides the fact that they are not extremely hard (resistant to scratches, but not so much to strong blows), is that being natural stone they need sealing and special treatments since, being porous, they can absorb substances such as grease and oils that leave stains, or even substances such as lemon can attack the surfaces, eliminating the shine.

In addition, as each piece of marble is unique, so is its design and appearance. That is reflected in its unique veins, which give it a great personality, making this type of countertops a very elegant and sophisticated choice.

Granite countertops are always timeless. They stand out for their high heat and impact resistance, long durability, easy cleaning and maintenance, as well as fantastic value for money. On the other hand, we must be careful with certain products and acidic foods.

Sintered stone countertops are a more advantageous option than other materials due to their quality/price ratio and their wide range of finishes, textures and thicknesses. They are distinguished by their high resistance, durability and low porosity, thus avoiding permanent stains and bacteria accumulation.

Another of the positive points of sintered stone countertops is that it is a sustainable material that is created from raw materials such as glass, quartz and heated in industrial furnaces until it is compacted. They can incorporate up to 90% of recycled raw materials.

Natural wood countertops

Wooden countertops are always a good choice if what we are looking for is to bring a rustic touch and warmth to our kitchen. There are many types of finishes: beech, oak, walnut, pine... Each of these materials has its particularities, such as color, grain, finishes and even touch.

It is important to take into account in this case, that it is a delicate material that needs a special treatment, but if we take care of it, we will have a countertop for many years. In any case, natural wood countertops look good with the passage of time, as long as we do not mind seeing those details and marks of everyday life such as nicks, stains, or small cuts, which convey that the kitchen is alive and well. This, as almost everything in this life, depends on the taste of each one.

Laminate countertops

If you are looking for an economical and quick to install countertop, laminate countertops are the perfect choice. They resist shocks quite well, but not so well to high temperatures. The finishes that these countertops offer are infinite thanks to the fact that they are coated with a formica sheet that can imitate wood, marble, stone or any finish you can imagine. As you can see, it is a very versatile and practical material.

Composite countertops

Within composite countertops, porcelain countertops and mineral countertops are the most popular choices.

Porcelain countertops are an ideal material for all types of kitchens, no matter what style you are looking for. Its wide variety of finishes offers many possibilities, as well as its outstanding durability and resistance. It withstands scratches, stains and high temperatures without any problem, allowing you to cut directly on it and spill any product without fear. In addition, it offers a wide variety of board thicknesses that adapts to the particular needs of each composition.

It also offers good resistance to moisture and bacteria, making it optimal for daily use.

Mineral countertops are the most commonly installed in recent years in domestic kitchens. They are composed of minerals and recycled materials such as glass, which gives them great strength and durability. It is very resistant to shocks and has an antibacterial protection.

It is true that it has some disadvantages. Its resistance to heat and scratching is more limited, so it should not be cut directly on it, nor should hot pans be placed on it. In any case, thanks to brands such as Silestone from the Cosentino group, they have become one of the most demanded products on the market.

Stainless steel countertops

Do you like industrial style and Michelin Star restaurant kitchens? If so, the stainless steel countertop is yours.

Thanks to its impermeability, it is the preferred material of the hotel and catering trade, as it is the material that most ensures the asepsis of food. It is also highly resistant to heat. Its only disadvantages are its sensitivity to scratches and its high cost. For this reason, until now it has not been very common to see them in domestic kitchens. However, their use is becoming more and more frequent, since scratches in this type of countertops are no longer an aesthetic problem, but part of their charm.

Other types of countertops

The market is constantly changing and the search for new products to innovate in our kitchens is the order of the day.

To highlight some other material used in kitchens we could talk about the glass countertop. Its use is not very common, but it certainly gives kitchens a different touch since it allows to incorporate many different finishes by texturing the surface or coloring it. Where it is most commonly found is on the front of the countertop, that is, the wall space between the countertop itself and the wall unit. Placing glass, or even mirror in this area allows to give a very different character to the kitchen.
